It has been held that a mean temperatura of 70 degrees F. for the summer ruonths, June, July and August (cornbined), is conducive to the best development of the sugar beet, provided there is also adequate rainfall. According to a recent report of the agricultural department on the sugar beet iudustry, there were last year nine sugar beet factories, only one of which is located east of Nebraska. Itisexpected that this year there will be 17 factories in operation. Au eschange quotes statistics of the department of agrioulture to the effect that the farmers of the United States reoeived íroni their cereal crops of 1897 something like $130,000,000 more than for those of 1896 and $80, 000, 000 more thau for those of auy preceding year since 1892. J. H. Hale is credited by au exchange with the statement that the native seedling apple, budded or grafted right where the seed sprouted, so that the stock has the origiual taproot and all others uninjured, does niake a longer lived aud more healthy tree than one transplanted froin the nursery. A man who has made monoy ■with brussels sprouts says they do best on the lightest sandy soil. The seeds should be sown about the middle of June, aad the plants transplanted twice before baing put wbere they are to reinain.
