The sugar erop of the world amounts In a normal year to about 8,000,000 tons, of which the larger part, about 4,500,000 tons, comes from beets, and the remainder, 3,500,000 tons, from sugar cane. Of the latter the largest proportlon comes from the West Indies, and a large amount from the Island of Java.
