The brave and trne Thirty-First Michigan whioh has boen pining for action, has the sympathy, the respeot and the admiration of onr oitizens. The war is over and onr brave army and navy have covered themsalves with glory. Their bravery, their discipline and their markinanship has been proven to the world. It was fitting that Dewey who won the first great viotory of the war shonld win the last, and he did it in the handsorae manner whioh faas made him tlie greatest hero of the war. __________ The colored voter has always been trne to the republican party and has not received mnch reoognition from its bands. They are good enongh to elect white repnblicans to office, and very many of these ■would have been defeated had it not been f or the colored vote ; they are good enongh to fight the battles of the repablio, and they have show mnch valor in the war with Spain, but wbat do tbey get froin the repnblioan party? Is it any wonder then tbat such a cali for a conferenoe shonld be made as is fonnd in onr news columns. In our news columns may be fonnd the resnlt of a canvas o: the Main st. merchants on tbe subject of hitcbing posts along Main st. The merchante wisely took the view that these posts were desirable. It is neoessary if we wish to keep or inorease the farmers' trade in tb. is city that it be made easy for them to hitoh tbeir horses. It is v?ell enongh to talk back streets, but if onr merchants really want trade they ■will raake it easy for their customers to faitob near them. There are far too íew hitohing posts in the city anyway. It is sometimes quite difflcnlt to flnd a place to itcb a botse, and instead of lessening the nnmber of posts, it wonld be mnob to the interest of tbe merohants conld they be largely inoreased.
