A STUDENT DROWNED

Lewis F.Brown, a Senior Engineering Student

DIED AT WHITEMORE LAKE

His Boat Drifted Away While He Was Bathing

An Ineffectual Attempt of a Companion to Rescue Him. His Body

Whitmore Lake, Mich., May 1. - (From a regular correspondent) - Lewis F. Brown, of Bay City, who rooms at 431 Thompson st., Ann Arbor, was drowned Sunday at Whitmore Lake while swimming from a row boat. His companion, who used every effort to save him, was Robert C. Cardell, lit '02, and rooms at 521 E. Jefferson st. , Ann Arbor. His home is in Perry, Iowa.

They with several others went out in a sail boat, attached to which was also a row boat. When out in the middle of the lake Brown and Cardell went into the detached row boat for a swim. Both jamped into the lake and enjoyed the swim for a few minutes when Brown noticed that the boat was drifting away and became frightened. Cardell cautioned him to keep cool and the sail boat was signaled for assistance. However, there was hardly any breeze and it took some time before the boat could reach them. Caraell told Brown to tread water which he did until the former could get his breath as he was somewhat exhausted. As soon as Cardell released Brown the latter went down while the sail boat was within 15 rods from him. The depth of the water in that place is about 40 feet. Even at this point had Brown come up again as is usual, he would have been saved but the body stayed at the bottom.

Immediately a lot of boats left the docks and search lights were used but the body could not be found. An expert diver was immediately sent for from Detroit. Coroner Watts and Undertaker Martin, of Ann Arbor were sent for and are here and as soon as the body is found will hold an inquest.

MOSS.

Coroner B. F. Watts held the inquest over the body of F. Lewis Brown at Whitmore Lake Monday morning and brought in the following verdict:

"We the undersigned coroner's jury, find that F. Lewis Brown carne to his death by accidental drowning in the waters of Whitmore Lake in Washtenaw county at about 6 o'clock in the afternoon of April 30, 1899.

Signed.

Thos. D. Moss, F. M. Smith, Chas. B. Manly, M. F. Lutz, F. N. Barker, E. W. Snell.

John Todd was sworn and said that he was fishing at Todds' point and although he heard some one hollering, he did not know any one was drowned until told by Cardell. He was the first man Cardell spoke to. Todd did not see the accident which was abont 40 rods from him. He saw only two parties when he heard the call for help.

James Robinson said that he went to look for the body and he with Al. Stevens found it, the latter seeing the body first. They had no difficulty in raising the body when they found it. Robert C. Cardell was sworn and stated that they drove out to Whitmore Lake Sunday at about 4 p. m. and went in swimming. They were near Todd's point about 25 rods from shore. They were swimming about when Brown said he could not reach the boat, whereupon Cardell said he could get it in a minute and went after it, but was called back by Brown who said he could not stay up and called him back. He went back. Cardell got him by the arm. Brown soon had him by both shoulders and slipped away from him and he again caught him by the arm. "The sail boat was now near but I could not hold up any more and asked him for a minute's rest, but he went down. The sail boat then carne up and I got into it and was afterwards rowed to shore. "
