The average distance of discovery of a torpedo-boat by the searchligb.t from a battleship has been calculated to be 781 yards and the greatest distance 2,000 yards. Thus, taking the distance at which the torpedo can be fired with effect at 500 yards, it will be generally found that a torpedo-boat will have to cross about 300 yards under fire from the snip she is attacking and it -will take the little craft about halt a minute to do this.
