TAPS WERE SOUNDED

_________________

BY CO. A, 31ST MICH. VOL. OVER HERMAN EHNIS'S GRAVE.

_________________

His Company Number Was 40 and there were Just 40 of the Company Present at the Funeral.

This morning Co. A fell in under command of Captain Granger and proceeded to the home of their comrade Herman Ehnis who died Tuesday from a fever contracted in Cuba. The funeral services were very impressive. The deceased was buried in the German cemetery in Northfield. The company lined up on either side of the grave and over it were shot three volleys and taps were sounded by the buglar. The floral offering given by the company was a large knapsack upon which was Herman Ehnis' company number, "40." This is a peculiar coincidence as the number was 40 and there were just 40 of his comrades in war present to administer the last sad rites over his corpse.
