Spcuking of her she saya: 1 have secn uiauy wouien eomo to the eurfaoc of cupitolian lite out of obscurity, aml go back into obscuriiy again; have Men Bundrcds of so called "leaders of society" shrivel and go out in seorehing fianio of faahiou; while I have ibllowed witli a tender heart tliia womao, the wife of a fauiou-s man - a wonian whoui nobody called a "leader." She, meanwhile, ha not boen lifted off her lèet, as niany women are, by their hu.sband's rising fortunes ; no "spreading" forth in stylo of dress or livin ; no "airs." And in Washington, in ollioial lifc, that tueans cvcrything - indicative of ohnraoter. Sh has moved on in the tranquil tenor of hor unobtrusive devotion to hor duty ; never forgetting the deuiands of her position or negiecting hor fricnds, yet niaking it her first oharge to bless home, to teach her children, to fit her boys for college, to bc the cqual friend, as well as the houored wife, of her busband. Gentle, patiënt, unobtrusive, almost to timidity, wise in speech, kcenly intelligent, liberally cducated, oonsoientiously dovoted to everything good - this is the woman who will perpetúate the loving, conseerated lifo that to day abidea in the white house, f as itrf mistress she enters it.
