F rom Washington under date of Aug. 18th, comes the report of a recommended appropriatlon of $882,000 tor next year for the conti nuance of lm pro vemen t8 of thlrteen Michigan liaibors. Under the uew Civil Service systeui the tirst appointiiieut WBI that of a vvoinan, a Vassar gradúate, Miss Mary F. Iloyt, of Counecticut, wlio reeeived the highest standing at the recent examinations. At the competitive dril! of Knights Templar, which took place Satiuday atternoon hut in San Francisco, Cal.,with 20,000 people in attendanee, the DcMolay Commandery, of Louisville, reeeived first pri.e, Raper, of Indlanapolls, second, and St. Bernard, of Chicago, third, only three connnaiKlcries cornpeting. Tlie Piesidential party arrivcd in the Upper Geyser Basin of the Yellowstone National park one week ago to-day going into camp ncar Oíd Faithful Geyser, which treated the party a few moinents after dismounting with one of its hourly eruptions as if spccially greeting the Cliief Magistrate of the nation. All members of the expedition are enjoying fine health, and nothing has occurreU as yet to mar the pleasure of the journey. Apropos ot the opening of the At t Loan Exhibition on to-morrow, at Detroit, erar fiiends visiting tlie same will be pleased to learn that the associatiou purpose publishing during the two months of the exhibit a daily quarto slieet of' eight pages, to be known as " Tlie Detroit Art Loan Record." Each morning ït will contain one or more valuable descriptions of collections exhibited in the Loan with historie Information on each. These take a wide range including notes on the paint- ings and statuary of the old masters and the modern school, etc. The wliole issue will make a 410 page volume, with index and title page. Single numbers, however, may be secured.
