The Mendelssohn Quintette Club, which is to sppear at University Hall, Saturday evcnln):, has been secured by the students' lecture association to fill the void left by Beecher's failure to keep bis engagement. Consequently the course tickets will admit to thia entertainment, or those holding them will have 50 cents, refunded as they niay choose. It is the private opinión of the writer that the " swap " has been a eood one for ticket-holders, and that but few will object to the change. Of Mr. Scanlan's acting the Chicago News remarks: " The most remarkable feature of this week's business bas been the crowds which hare nightly filled the Acadmy of Music. Not a seat has been fnund empty, and frequently standing room could hardly be obtained. A more remarkable Uiing is that, for once, the people wereright, and the entertainment was worth all the patronage it received. Mr. W. J. Scanlan is a young Iri.h actor of superlative merit. He is handsome in person.polite in manner, exquisitely neat and clean in costume, plays with a freshntiS aiHl tpllU nul Oftcn peen, iHngt) wh a ilute like voice a repertoire of well selected songs, and has a piece exuctly suited to hls style. Dramatically he is superior to Murphy ; musically he excels Kinniftt, and, having the advantage of novelty, should draw equally well at any theatre in America. He is, in Irish roles, the coming man." The Good Templara and B. E. Quartette will give an ice creara and strawberry social an entertainment at Union Temperance hall ncit Monday evening. All are invited. Thefourth annual Musical given by the pupils of Prof. R. II. Kempf takes place this, VVedne8day evening, at tlie opera house. Mme. Marie Tilden of Detroit, Mrs. O. Woodward of Ann Arbor, and Mr. Frohlich of Detroit, assisting. The program is a long and varied oue. At 4 o'clock Monday afternoon, Dr. Alvin W. Chase died at bis home in Toledo. He had been seriously ill for several weeks, so the result was not a surprise to bis fiïends. Deceaseil was born In New York in 1817, and was consequently 68 years old. In 1856 he carne to Aun Arbor and commenced the publication of a book known as "Dr. Chaae's Recipe Book; or, Information for Everybody." In this he was wonderfully successful, and frora the proceeds of its sale he purchased the Ann Arbor Coukier, and erected the fine brick block in wbich that office is now located. Probably no other man is better known in this city Uian the doctor, and bis death will be mourned by many friends. He leaves two daughters and one son, none of vrhom are residents of tliis city. Ilis remains will be brought to this city for intennent to morrow, reaching here on the 10:20 train frotn Toledo. The procession will be formed at the depot and march directly to Forent Hill cemetery, the services being in charge of the Odd Feil w fraternity of this city, of which be was a member for many years.
