President Clovelaud wouUl make ; good Ijase-ballist. He is "knoekinj; 'en out,1' right along now. The recent meeting of tlie press assoclatlon and editorial excursión, seems to have been the most successful one - socially, at least - tliat has ever beei held in the state. The splendid hospitality of tlie Traverse City people was one of the most noticeable features of the occasion, and all who attended are loud In their praises of everybody and every thing. It will probably be a shock to Bishop Gillespie and tlio diocese of Western Michigan, to learn that Bishop Htevcns of Pennsylvania, has decided Uut tm ladies elected to the vcstry of a oharch ii that state are eligible under the law. This is tho flrst decisión in favor of wo men ever made In the Episcopal church. Bishop Stevens has a level, progressive and Christiau head on his shoulders. The seini-annual report of the M. C R. R., published reccntly shows gross earuings of $4,973,000 ; operating ex penses, taxes, etc, f 3,8SG,OOO ; net earnings, $1,087,000. After paying the interest and rentáis there is a deficieney ol $243,000, against a surplus last year o $107,000. Thcre is a decrease in gros.s earnings of $650,500, a decrease In expense of $430,000, and a deerease in net earning of $300,000. By reading a few of our democratie exchanges, we have ascertalned the facl that this is the season of the year when the democrats carry several repuBTTcan states. Iowa, Pennsylvauia, and California are sure to go democratie now - (some way or other they do not mention Massachusetts or Malne in tbcir list). Bul when the votes come to be counted it always turns out to the great dissapointment of our dem. friends. Haveyou noticed forsome unexplained reason that the democratie journuls have all at once hushed up abont that great steal of $1,000,000 coined at the New Orleans mint and found to be missing? You have'nt? They've hushed, just the same By tracing up the records they have found that it was stolen unüer James Buchanan's administration, and James, was not mucli of a republican, you know. That $1,000,000 went to sustain the life of the southern confederacv, the leaders of which are now the ruléis ol' this government. Not one cent so far, has been found clinging to the handt of the republicans. If Detroit will raze hei electric light towers to the giound, and utilize the piping by erecting a pole upon the opposite corners of her street intersretions frono which to string a lamp across the center of said intersections, she will flod the electric light far superior to gal for street lightlng purposes. Jt niight take a few more lamps to supply the city by this method of lighting, but the niprovement would be so marked, the resulta sn sniisfactory, that the few lamps would not be begrudged. This is the only aatisfactory and at the same time economical way tot electrie street üghtiug. If you don't be lieve it, try it.
