The Ovni Union has a good word to to say of the progress made by the country press durlnt; the past decade orso: "Michigan lias some able newspapers, and many editorial and general wriMn able to shine wlth credit on the best prints In the land. The newspaper fraternity has made wonderful strldes in the direction of excellence within the past ten years. The dally press of tho state may, and of courso will, luid maoy ndications of weakness in the local columns of the country press; country editors find shortcomings and rubbieli in the columns of the dally press of the state, but for depth of thought, beauty of dicüon and real meritoiïous soholarly productions tho editors of the country newspapers of Miclii" gau ire certainly entitled to the respect and conh'deuco of their co-laborers upon the metropolltau prees of tho state. Ten years ago you coukl scarccly count a dozen really able men on the country press; to-day it is a'poor country paper indeed whose editor U not competent to write a good editorial on almost any of the public questions bcfore tho peoplo. What state has a more prosperóte country press ? " Whoever wrote the following hit the nail straight on the head: "We would like to impresa upon our good people the importance of getting acquainted with the stiaugers who are seckmg homes among us. A family ought not to be allowed to livo four inonths without receiving a cali trom neighbors. Many a woruan has become homesick only for the reason that she tHó'ug'hi herself slighted bv her new ieirlibors. This ought not to be. Especially should the inembers of the several churches look aftcr new-comers and see that they lind encouragement and assistance for tliose of their own 'falth and order.' This is not proselytlng, bnt a christlan duty. I( the family have no church relati, it is ons none the less the duty of good people to ïake their acqualntancc, and by kind ctg and christlan work lertd tht-in dp to ie better way. Look af ter the newomers, and mako them feel that they are welcome among us, and very soon they ill not want to leave us." Recent dispatehes in the duil papers ell that "in Lincoln coiuity, N, M., ne:ir ie Pattos mountaln, can be traced what ¦ere once the walhj of a lanre cilj'. Indc the walls are growing monster oedftl rees, said to be thousands of years oíd." t naturally arises in one's miiul whethur r not, thousands of years from now, lere may be growiug great trees where ow stand our more populous cities, and new race of people trying to solre tho ínystery of the past by the relies found nderneath the root of tliose trees.
