Recycle A2 Needs You!

Recycle Ann Arbor (RAA) is serving increasing numbers of recyclers and increasing amounts of materials - which is great! lts just that we need some help while we're working to increase our funding. Volunteers are needed for a few hours a month, a few hours a week, or for one day. You can help out at the Drop Off Station, on the curbside trucks, or in the processing baler building on Ellsworth at Platt. Call 971-9676 for info. and to sign up! It's fun! RAA participates in the deferred sentencing community service program and the U-M Work/Study program ($6.25/hr., flexible schedules). There's plenty of hands-on experience waiting for students, environmentalists, urban planners, social workers, activists, business folks, musicians- -everyone. Come on down!

Whether or not you volunteer, you can recycle your newspaper, glass, tin, aluminum, used motor oil, car batteries, and corragated cardboard at the Drop Off station. Newspaper should be bundled in paper grocery bags or tied with string. Glass should be sorted by color and have the lids removed. Tin cans must be flattened and have paper labels removed. Cardboard boxes must be flattened and bundled. See the curbside map for when you can leave recyclables at the curb for pick-up.

Currently, RAA does not recycle plastics. We would like to see them removed from the waste stream, too. Unfortunately, our limited funding does not include time for the research, piloting, and implementation of handling plastics. We are hoping to obtain such funding in the future. Meanwhile, we suggest reducing the amount of plastics (i.e. milk jugs) you use. Milk can be purchased in glass containers at the People's Food Co-op and at Arbor Farms. Ask grocery stores to carry glass rather than plastic containers. You can also create ways to reuse jugs. For example, you can purchase cider in bulk, recycle used motor oil, or cut the jugs in half and use the bottom for starting seedlings in spring and the top to protect plants outside. There must be as many ways to re-use them as there are milk jugs in the world!

The Recycling Drop Off Station is a program of the Ecology Center - a non-profit community environmental organization which provides services in waste recycling, energy conservation, education, and advocacy. The station is open Fridays and Saturdays, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. For recycling service and education information, cali 665-6398.
