MeuJtrie was a nmivcof Snuih Uamüni, nnd of Soottl-sh decent. Ho eaily cspousud the c-awsu of Amanean indëpeiidence, and, in March 1776, was ordered to construct a fort ou ÖDÜivan Island, at tlio moutlj of Chiirlestoii harbor, and was engaged öpon the work when th Jiii i-.h iiuet appeared cff the eoast. He was advistd 10 abandon the fortresfl, uh (Je:). Charlea Loe. hia superior eer, declarad it was no better than "a ' slaughter pon." But Moiiltrio had fuith in his own work, and defended the fort with great skill and valor, and drove away tha enerny. One British ship was lost and twöothors wereso riddled as to havo almost becoine a wreek. Tho loss of the enemv was '222 killud and wonndod. Tbe Americana bad elevan killed and twehty-sis wounded. The fortress was hardly njured by the fire of the Britiah squadron, when the batth was over every gun on the fort, but one, was still in, position. Tho determination and courage of Moultrie in tliis engagement elicited great praise, and the fort was, by universal assent, named in honor of ts skillful builderand gailant defender
