- ïhere is a set ol people whoiu we cannot bear - tho pinks of iashionable propriety - wbose every word is precise, and whose every movemont is unoxeeptionable - but who, though well versed in all tho catalogues of polite behavior, have not a partiële oí soul or cordiaiity about them. We allow that Iheir mauner ! may be abundantly correct. Tbere i may be elegance in every position, not ! a smile out of place, and not a step that would not bear the meusurement I oí the severest gcrutiuy. This is all very fine; but what wo want is the gayety of social intercourse; the ness that speaks affability to all, that ; chases tirnidity írom every bosora, and tells every man in the company to be confident and happy. This is what we conceive to be the virtue of the text, and not the tsickening fonnality of those who walk by rule; and would reduce the whole of the h uraan life to a j bound systom ol inistry and constraüit.
