Reported Fighting At Pensacola And Slaughter Of Southern Troops
Froin the Cincinnati Commercial, April 22. Un Saturday a gentleman, direct trom Memphis by railroad, passed tiiiougb the city, en route for 2íew 1 ork. He left Memphis on Friday, and says he saw a private dispatcb there, stating that on Thursday Lieut. Slemmer, ot' Fort Pickens, liad ordereá the Confedérate troops to stop throwing tip batteries with which to bombará hira. They declined obedience and he oponed fire upon them, and in the course of the ñrst day's Uring three hundred oí' them were killed. The dispatcli was not permitted to be published in Memphis. [t will be remembered that we have not had a word by telegraph from Fort Pickens Íbr some time, whilu it ís known that Fort Pickens has been reintbrced and its commander directed to causethe building ofsand batteries to cease. The chances are that there has been, and perhaps still is, a desperate struggie between Pickens and the hos tile forts and batieries. The fact that we hear nothing oí' it from the South certainy does not indicate southern success.
