' - ■- ■ 1 1 - m From the Louisville Journal, h ü saw yeeteraay a plan ot the battla fouglit near Columbia on the 4th of July by the ga'lant Col. O. H. Moore, at the liead of 200 men, of the Twenty-fifty Michigan, against John Morgan's force of four or five thousand. Col. Moore'j repulso of a foree equal to twentv or twenty five times his own was one of tbe most chivahous affairs on record, . 'ibough it is unquestionable hislory t reads like tbe wildest romance. Col. Moore preparcd his defenses with greut judgnionl., uut, at the turning point of tbe buttlt', be bad not the sügbtest advantage in position. He and bis men were upou one side and Morgan's men upon tbe otber side of an abattis of felled trees, erouching but a few yards apart and firicg at eaeb otber upon tering of perfect equality througb tbe brancbes. The fighting there was most terrific. All lbo Federal soldiers kept tbeir place the living not less tbon tbe dead, and tos rebel hosts at length fled in confusión The disaster sustained by Morgan upon this occasion cost hira full twelve hours' tiiue in his movements. He bad inten. ded, as be himself stated, to multe a dasb into Louisville, but bis long and unexpected delay causod him change his plans. After tbe figbt was over, Col. Moote received information, apparently correct that Wheeler's cavalry were at Coluiabi advaueiiig on him. He niigh-t have retreated, but, as he said to Morgan in reply to i summons to surrender, it was th 4th of July. He made a brief baraogue to bis men, telling tbem that they mus be ready for anotber bard fight and agiinst a forcé even greater than Morgau's, and they gave a loud cheer to indicate that they were ready. Bot no Wlieeler was furthcoming. We don't think that Col. Moore mads a very great Provost Marshal when he was bere, but he figbts like the devil.- We rashly invited hinj to make a charge with his fractio'i of a regiment upon the Journal office, but we hope he wonTt do it, We apolgise. We retract. We back out. We kn.ick under.
