Fortress Monroe, Fob. 8. The expedition having returned, we are permitted to state the followiug facts: Ou Saturdny morniug Geuei-ai Butler's foroes, under cominand of Brigadier General "Wisiar, uiarched from Yorktown via New Kent Uourt House. ïhe cavalry arrived at half past two o'clock ' yesterday morning at Bottoin's bridge, and marched across the Chiokahominv ten miles from ltichmond, for the purposii oí luaking a ruid iuto ]tichmoud, and endeavoriug by surprise to libérate our prisoners ihere. ïhe cayalry reachcd tho bridge at the time appoiuted, niarching, iu aixteen and a hours, 147 miles. A forco of infantry followed in thc.ir rear for the purpose of supportmg tucm. It was expected to surprise the enemy at Bottom's bridgo, who had for sometime only a small picket there. The surprise failed beuause, as the Riohiuond Jíxaminer to day says, a Yaukeo deserter gave information in Eichiuoud of the iiiteuded movement. The enemy had felled ajlarge amount of tint ber so as to choce up and obstruet the fords and ruake it i'npossiblc for our oavalry to pass. After remaining at ïhe bridge from 2 o'oloek until 12, General Wistar joined them with bis nfantry, and the whole object of surprise having been defeated, General Wistar returned to Williumsburg. Ou the marcli back to New Kent House, bis rear was at! lacked by the eucmy, but they were repulsed without loss to us. Our infantry, i those régimen ts of whieh were colored, marched more thau eighty miles, whicfi j was made in fifty-six hours. The cavairy ! marehed over ono hundred miles in üfty hours. This shovs ihat it is possib'.e to make a campaign in Tirgima in winter. The dispatch boat is just in from Newbero. General Palmer reports everything going on well in this distnet. The losses to us in the way of public property are to.ü trilling to menticn. We could not desire a; moro favorable result. - jjosses in lulled, wounded and missing are but few. '■ ■
