The last season has begun in good earneet, and I hasten to inlorm you of a new and heroic development of patriocism. The frightful coat of all material for fine dresses has filled rnaiiy lacjiea of the highest nobiiity with a spirit of noble renunciation, There is notliing they will not gladly sacrifico, and they are there fore fiimly resolved to dispense with druss altogether I have recently attended several parties of the selectcsl f'ashion, and with every young tnan in town, have pbserved with the uiost kindling admiratiou that what you wil} per luit me to cali the heroie movement is already rapidly advunciug. It b .gins at the top of the dress, and the mofit unflinching of the fair patriota have already reached a point in the sacrifico far below the neck. The delightful emulation continues, so tbnt by the opeuing of next season we may confidently expoct to nee perfect heroism. Of course, as dress disappears, a refined and elegant substitute is provided. The neek, for instance, is draped in the most exquisito enamel; the cbeeks are protected by the roaieBt rouge, aud lest the exposure of the eyebrows and eyelids should be injurious to health, they are clothed in the softest henna. This simple costume is surely enough for those who are ready for the last sacrifice. What sublime economy 1 What sublime renunciation ! The farther it goes the more indeseribable it is. I wish you would come and see for yourself. We never think of not going to parties now wben there is so much to be seen ; and what do we not owe to ladics who thus surrender everything! A queer o}d prig to whom I was dilating with enthusiasm upon the subject, replied, ' Yes, I havj geen a great deal in my time, but this giyes me an entirely new view c f woman." Of course it does. Is it not clear that every one who is capablo of taking part in this great movement is capabla of anything ? I know that you are interested in evorything which shows devotion to the country, and although you were a little skeptical about the Woman's League, to use only domestic manufactures, because you thought there was some evasiĆ³n about it, 1 am sure ycu will hear with aetonishment and gratitude of this truly brave economy, which conceals nothing. All for our couutry or dress well last, is thejinspiring rallyiog cry of the lovelv patriots. Good-bye I must be off to dress for the ball, which the ladies used to do before the patriotic days Yes dress is just the differenoe between us now. Kow much trouble they save themselves ! But all virtue bas its cotnpensation. Bemeni ber, I havo told jou nolhing but the naked truth, and have barely tima to acribe myself, Yours, in breathless expectation, TAOMAS PLEP.
