From thesu observations is to bo devised a plau for a Polar expeditiou, which it is lioped will soou leave somo Germán port. Dr. Petermann assorts that as the part of the sea indicated is uuder the influence of the Gulf Stream, ifc will bc much oasier to penétrate in tho.se quarterg towards llio Pule thau by any of the usual routes. IIo secins also to hope that the quantity of fossil ivory to bo colleoted on the way will defray part of the oosts of the expeditioa. The latest English papers annouuee that a steamer of two hundred tons has been ohartered in London for the new Arctie voyago of exploration, which, acoordirig to Dr. Petormanirs proposals, is to precede au expodition upon a largo scale. The steamer was to sail for Hammerfest, wherc it was lioped to piek up a crew experienced in Arctie navigatiou. This done, tho expedition will proceed to tho Eastern coast of Spitzbergen, possibly a!so to Gillis Land, from wliieh point the actual object of exploration will be entered upon. This is to ascertain, by careful cxamination of the seas between Spitzbergen and Nova Zembla, whether Dr. Petenaanu's conjectures as to the direct ion of the Gulf ütream aro correct. The funds for the exploration have been partly raised by subscriptions among tho Benatc citizens of Hamburg, and it is believed that tho amount still. wanted will, tsoon be subscribed by mcrehauts in Hainburg and Breinen. The exploration party will bc placed under the command of Captain llagemann, of Hamburg.
