Once t smiled a silent dell TVhere the people did uot dwell ; They liad gone unto the wars, Trusüng to the mild-eyed stars, Nightly, irom their azuretowers, ïo keep watcb above the íiowers, In the miiUt of wbicb all day The red sun-Hght lazily lay. iVotc each vúitor siíall coní'ess The sad valley is restlessness. Nothing there is uiotionless - Noihiojj save the airs that brood Over the magie solitude. Ah, by no wind are stirred those trees Tliat palpítate like the chili seas Around the rnisty Hebridebe! Ah, by no wind those clouds are driven, Tliat njstle ttiioiigb the unquiet Heaven Uneasily, from morn till even, Orer the violets there that lie In myriad types of the human eye- Over the lilies there that wave And weep above a uanieless grave ! ïhey wave; from out their íragrant tops Eternal dews come down in drops. They -eef; from ott' their delicate sterns Pereaniai lears desceod in geius.
