Mr. I. McLeary Brown, who, rumor says, s to succeed Hon. Anson Burlingame as Minister Plenipotentiary from China to the westera powere, is of Sootch descent, and went out to China ebout nine years ago as student interpreter in the British Consular eervioe. His pay then was 81,000 per annum. After BtuJyiog Chinese for some years he as appoÏDted nterpreter to the British Legation at Pckin, whence he came to undertake his present post at a salary of $6,000. If he is appointed in Mr. Burlingame's stead, he wiil receive xio less than SCO 000.
