The New York Sun tells a story of Rev. Thomas Carlton, D. D., of tbe Methodist Churoh, who, as a long-headed business man and an adroit manager, is called the Thurlow Weed of Üiat denomination. Wheo he was preaching nenr Lo;kport, N. Y., about 27 years ago, the Methodist church there had got into a disruptiog row by the introducüon of odc violonoello, odo fiddle, aud twn flutee, nto tlie choir. Some of the oldfasliioned uiembers, who liad been convertedin bar na aud at camp-mectinge, lookcd upon tiiose instrumenta as emissaries üf the devil, and insistud on tliuir instant expulsión from tho meeting house. The younger members, who had been converged ou tho Brussels carpet in frout of the muhogany railing whicb surrounded the aliar, stood by the vi"loncel!o, fiddle, and tiutes, anddeclared that they and their playera ehould beeome an integral porüon of the worship of ihe Lord in that cougregation. The storm becaroe too tempestuous for the repident minister to weather, and so tbe adroit Tom Carlton waa ent on to tstke matter in hand. He oame, and saw, and eaid nothiug. He etaid in town till Sabbath mom ing, and was then invited to preach He aecepted the invitation. When he anuounced hls text it riveted sttention. It was the first clause of the 7th verse of the 87th Psalm : "As wcll the singers as tho players on instruminis shall be there!" The placo referred to in the text, said Mr. Carlton, is hesven. It is assumed that the players on instrumenta will be there. That is a settled faot. No question arises as to tkat. The fact that the playcrs on instruments will bo there is the basis of the doclaration in the text The singers are to be there, it would seern, rather as a coüiplement or supplement to the players on nctruments. The singers will he there as we! at the playera If the pla3ers are not thfcre, thei the singers canuol bo there. The I presenco of tho playera on instruments is the foundation of the whole thing And si ihe preacher went on, in a most ingenious manner, and without referring to tbe difficulties whiuh he had come to plácate. Tho result was that no singer who wanted to go to heaven (and every Methodist is a singer who wants to go hi heavcu) dared to go back on the playera on instrument, either in tbia world or the world to eoiue ; and barmony thencieforward reigued in the Methodist church 'iu Lockport.
