State of Michigan, Executive OrtL, ) Lansing, October S, 1871. j Tho city of Chicago, in the neighboring State of Illinois, has boen visited, in the providence of the Almighty God, with a calamity almost unequaled in tl. o annsls of history. A lai-ge portion of that beautiful and most prosperous city has been re.lucod to ashes, and is now in ruins4 Many millions of dollars in property, the accumulation of years of industry and toil have been swept away almost in a n:o uent. The rich have been reduoed to penury, the poor have lost the little thcy possessed, and many thousands of people reudered homeless and houseless aro now without the absolute necessaries of life. I therefore earnestly cali upon every portion of Michigan to tako iminediate measures tor nlluviating the pressing wants of that fearfülly afflicted city, by collecting and forwarding to the Mayor or proper authorities of Chicago supplies of foud as well as liberal contribiitions of money. Let this sore calamity of oxir neiglibors remisd us of the uncortainty of earthly poM 'ssions, and wlicn ono niembor suffers all the members should suff. r with it. I cannot doubt that the whole peoplo of the Htate will most gladly and most promptly nd most libcrally respond to tl. is urgent demand upon thtir sympatliics, hut no words of mine can pkad so strongly as thü calamity itself.
