The Washington correspondent of the Chicago Tribuut writes : Austin Blair, of Michigan, is truly in deep water. Zach Chandler is moving with all tho fire-brands of the Postoffice Department in Blair's district, and means to drive hiiu out of public life. ClMwell is giving no end of Blair's postoffices over to Chandlor, who is putting Blair's enemies into thera, and thus the Postoffice Departmcnt - which runs behind several inillionsa isnotliing but an instrumentality of private vengeance and Federal despotism, when so directo.d. Blair is five years younger than Chandler, and a college gradúate. He has always been a luwyer, and has been mauy years in public life. Chandler carne ï'rom New Hanipshire, where his unele had been a Kepresentative, and, after growing tolerably rich as a merchant at Detroit, and standing once for Governor, to be knocked down, he got to the Sonate by a judicious extensión of credits to country mer chants, auiong whom he canvassed, and put his politioal ambition to thora in tho argument that, as Michigan was a State surrounded by water, and varied in resources, the mercantile element ought to be recognized in her public affairs. lïe has been throe times elected, although each election costs him an inercasod gum of money, and ho is said to have spent a full year's salary last time. His income is said to be from $75,000 to $90 (100 Chandler has no elements of a public nian, exeept office-getting, bullyragging swaggeiing, and making foolisfa speeches entirely unworthy of a State with tho high-mindednesa and intelligence o Michigan. Blind intoxioated lovo o power and consideration is at the bottom of the inan, and ho had Ferry, his col league, elected tho last time, eo that thero would be.only one will from that State in the Señate. As ono of his colleagues wittily remarked : " Elect Torn Ferry, and Michigan will have but one Senator ; elect Bill ard, and Pennsylvanla will liavó lhr;e (Howard being the Pennsylvania Bil road in Michigan) ; elcct Aiistin Blaii and she will have two, - which Chandlo does not want." Blair has takon up tli gage - the President blindly deferring (o Chandler in his disposition to crush Blai out - and the Cincinnati luovoinont aiu Liberalism wiil probably güt some hel] from a man wlio is as oíd a proteotíoniw as Horace Greeley hiinself. Zach Chandler belongs to tho junto of men whom the public inturests req"uire to be drivcn out of civil lif!, as despotic as some Oriental governor, and cquully us servile to the imperial administialion above him. His record here is one continuous descent in all the higher attributes, whilo be is as constantly tightening his throttle upon private aotion aud independent thought.
