On Saturday last a terrible affair occurred m the town of Lyndon, about five miles northwest of Chelsea, which resulted in the killing of Martin Breitenbach, a íarmer aged about 60 years. As briofly as we can state, the surrounding circumatances, they are these : A party of eight young men and boys went from Scio to the looality named ábove to piek whortleberries. They first commenced operations in a swamp on the farm of John Cassidy, and were soon ordered off by Mr. C. Instead of obeying, his cauc wal snatched from him and he was maltreated and beaten. The party then went into another part of the swamp adjoiuing and on the farm of Mr. Bbeitenbach. Some wonien and girls were pieking berrios thero who were driven from the swamp by a profusión of oaths, obscene talk, and vile epitheta. The womcu reportad their conduct to Mr. Beeitenia'-u who was plowing in au adjoining field. He took a bhot gun and going into the road borlering the swamp ordered the men to leave. They refusing he fired over their heads. The neu then left the swamp, gathered around Mr. Jreitenbach, took his gun from him, pulled nd pushed him, and flnally one struck a blow rbich knocked him down. His wifo and daugher stood over him and prevented f urther asault. Mr. Huoh Cassidt, a neighbor, and over 80 'ears old, saw the blow struck and advispd the jarties that they had killed him and had bettor eave, which they soon did, several of them ropping stones as they started. Mr. Beeitenbach recovered from the blow, went to his ouse, thence to his field, and starting his team went nearly around the land when he was seen :o fall. He was removed to his house, a phyician sent for, but was never restored to conciousness, and died about 7 o'clock on Sunday vemng. The post mortem examination held on [onday afternoon showed that the skull was adly fractured and without doubt by a blow with a stone. He leaves a wife and eleven chilren. A warrant was issued and on Monday moring, the several parties were arrested, and so rompt was Sheriff Flemino and his deputies lat they were lodged in jail in this city before ïey had heard of the death of their victim. - 'heir ñames are Elijan Marsh, George Marsh, 2zra Marsh and E ben Marsh, all sons of Jonas [arsh, who lives about four miles from this city nd four grandsons named Edward Bycraftt treorge Bycraft, Walter Metcalf and George Uetcalf. - The examination was commenced at Chelea on Wednesday, but its result is unknown at ie time we go to press, and we can not, thereore, say how many were held tor trial. We eem justified in saying, however, that an unrovoked and brutal murder of a peaceful citien has been committed.
