The perfect harmonious aotion of the iemocrats in conventiou yesterday was q stroug contrast to what the Republians are expected to manifest in the same )lace a week later. It was a serviceable lay's work that was done for the State. Che nomination of William Gaston for Jovernor by acclamation showed the ipirit that ruled the Convention, and was i rnerited tiibute of confidence and repect to a citizen whose instincts and 'aith belone; to the present time. Mr. 3-aston had become more or less widely íTiown as the honorpd incurabont of the Mayoralty in this city - an office whose luties found in kim a most able and well-equipped administrator. He carried the city through the great calamity of last yeaï with an admirable display of executive qualitics, and in other respects commeuded himself to the highest public nonrideiice and esteein. As a candidate to head the Democratie State ticket in this canvass he contrasta with astonishing effect with Butler, while every association of his personal and public character praces him far advanced on the side of progress, liberality and reform. The remainder of the ticket is not less admirable in character, and chosen with equal sagacity. It worthily snstains the one placed at its head. lts striking oharaotOTlstic, as will be generally noted, is its frendom from narrow partisanship, while thoroughly loyal to sound and liberal Democratie sentiment. Such a ticket ought to commend itself successfully to the independent voters of the commonwealth who demand a reform in current politica. It is alive with the spirit of the future, and appeals to whatever is pure and progressive in public affaire. Thero is no taint ot dynasty about it. It wcll representa a ielioitous junction of quíilitiís which the citizens of the common wealth generally desire. With such ñames placed upon so strong and acceptübie a platform, the Democrats enter upon the canvass auspiciously. - BoUm Post
