A dusty, sun-browned stranger stalked into one of the principal hotels early last evening, laid a big black valise, which had perhapa inade quite s. smart appearance in its youth, carefully besid liim, aud with a hand unaccustoiued to public writing, scrawled with great exertion the name ot' Lorenzo Smith upon the register. " Will you have soiue supper, Mr. Smith ?" asked the clerk. " Wall, no, I guess not," returned the rustió gentleman. "The folks at home put up a good bit of grub, ana thar's enough left in this yer carpet lag for a supper, I reckon." The clerk smiled, and the countryman and his corpulent carpet-bag were shown to their room. Country was somewhat dazed at the magnificence, but he was hungry, and placing the satchel on the center-table he drew f'orth a large chunk of boiled ham, numerous pieces oí' cold chicken, several enormoug doughnuts and a dozen hard boiled eggs. He waa about to absorb the meager repast into his starving system, when his eye caught sight of the "Kules for Guests " tacked upon the door. Ho got up and read them aloud. He carne to the last oiie, and read, " Meals in rooms charged extra." He read it again, this time slow'y- Waal, 111 be danged," he ejaculated, and turning to the table in an instant he had removed the ham, doughnuts and eggs and all iuto. the omnivorous carpetsack, and in another instant he was down into the office where he accosted the clerk with, " I stranger, yer sign up thar in my room says meals in rooms charged extra." "Yes'said the clerk, who recognized the oustomer of a fw moments ago, and could hardly represa his risibles, " One dollar extra." ' Wall, 111 be consarned," yawned the verdant, "I guess the expense of a hot meal won't be much more," and beckoning to the bell-boy he called out, " hy'er boy, show me the way to yer kitched," and a moment later he was in the hands of the waiters. - Chicago Timen.
