By the President of the United States of Ameriea : The approaohing close of aiiotlier year bnngs with it the occasion ior renewed thanksgivhig :ui.l aoknowledgment to the Almighty Ruler of tlie universe for tlie unntunbered mercies wliich he lias bestowed npon ua. Abundant harvests iiave leen amona the rowards of ïndustry. With local exceptions health has been among the blessings enjoyed.,Tranqnility at home and peace with other nations have prevailed. Frugal industry is regaining its merited recognition, and its nierited rewards gradually, but under the providence of God surely, as we trust, the nation is recoving from the lingering results of a dreadful civil strifc. For tliese and all the mercies vouchsafed, it bocomes ua as a people to return henrtfelt and grateful acknowledgements, and witli our tlianksgiving we may unite prayers for the cesgation of local and temporary sufferinp. I thcrofore recommend that on ïlmraday the 27th day of November next, the people meet in their respective places of worship, and make their acknowcdgements to Almighty God for His bounties and His protection, and to offer to Him prayers for thoir contiimance. In witness whcreof I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed. Done at the City of Washington, this 14th day of October, in the year of our Lord, 1873, and of tlie independence oí' the United States the 97th.
