During the progresa of our late terrible and destructivo war, many were alarined lest the fearful cost of two millions of dollars a day should prove ruinous to the country. They apprehended that the debt could never be paid. The governinent must go into repudiation ; or, as the whole of this amazing expenditure must ultimately come out of the people, they would be impoveiished and exhauated with taxes.
