Soon after the firsfc inauguration of Governor Seward as Chief Magistrate of New York, in 1839, Virus W. Smith, then and for many years afterward, a political ruan in the Whig party of Onondaga 3ounty, wroto to Mv. Thurlow Weed, reuesting him to cali upou the Governor, nd ask him to appoint a certain man as ndian Agent for the Onondaga tribo of ndians. The person recominended by VIr. Smith -vvas well known to Mr. Weed s ono of those fussy, ineddlesome, malaroit, pestilent fellows, nuisances to any jarty, whose only power is a power for nischief. He was therefore surprised at Mr. Smith's urging him for the position, nd thought it could only have boon done irough ignorance of his charactor or misepresentation on the part of others. Mr. Weed accordingly replied, expressng regret at Mr. Smith's request, in view f the objeotionable character of the canidate, and begging him to suggest a more aoceptable name. Next day Mr. ƒ eed mentioned the matter to the Govrnor (who was equally cognizant of the inan's charaeter), and remarked that he ïad answered the letter, and the action 'or the present would bo dolayed. It was ïought that this would bring Mr. Smith o Albany to look after the matter, as it id. On arriving he promptly called upon VIr. Weed, who expostulated with him as o the character of his candidate. " Nevrtheless," said he, " if you make it a point lat he must havo the place, why, have , he must." " Well, Mr. Weed, I am very anxious bout it." " But you know what a bad fellow he s 't" " Cau't help it : he's my man." "Butcan't you give some reason for 'our urgenoy 't" "No," replied Nr. Smith; "Ido not are to do that." " But the Governor thinks badly of this 'ellow, and certainly some explanation is ue him." " Well, if you insist upon it, 111 teil you. You know there is among the Onondagas wo parties, the Christians and the paans?" " I am aware of it." " Well, my man is a leetle in favor of he Christiaus. The pagans have found liat out, and what is more, they have greed among themselves that the moïent he comes among them they'll kill ïim !"
