It would be interesting to inquire luto the precise number of Christians who attend the 60 churches of Berlin, considering that this imperial city is the headquarters of tho Protestant anny now tuustered for the final overthrow of tho Koman Catholic faith. The fainous English clergyinan, Rowland Hill, once told story in the pulpit of how he had met a man in an ale-house who deolaiined fimously against the Bible. Eowland Hill asked hiui if he had over read the and the man in the ale-house said he had not for he did believe in it. A Berlin professor of European reputation told me frankly that no educated Gor mau was a believer in revealed religiĆ³n. Only some uneducated persons are believers of a most' energetic sort. I have been given to understand, upon good authority, that there are not 20,000 regular worshippers ia the 60 churchos of Berlin ; and perhaps if they are worshippers of the dpscription above mentioned, they are not much edified by their devotions. There are now, however, nearly 1,000,000 inhabitants in the Prussian capital, and though tho house of God is empty, the house of Baal is full, and no city has more drink shops of a disreputable kind. It is utterly ridiculous to talk of Church and State in Berlin, for it is all State and no Church thero. A few persous of tho uppfir 10,000, a few of tho better class of tradesmen go to 'church; nobody else goes, because tho church is not in fashiou under military government. Therefore, all the social relations of life aro changed. Women, for instance, at berlin, do not marry because they love a man : they merel}1 lovo him because they have married him, and they are not bound to obey tho soldier law or discipline.
