From the St. Louis Kepublican. Hiram Thompson, an Americtra traveler in England, went off in the lobby of a London theater lately like a torpedo. One of the house pĆ³lice went to him and found his pocket smoking and a pistol in the pooket with one barrel discharged. Thompson also smelt strongly of burnt powder, and was in bad odor. He was arrested and taken before a court. It appeared in evidence that Thompson had been accustomed to carry a pistol in America, and had forgotten or neglected to take it out of his pocket when he went to England. He was trying to get at his handkerchief in his pistol pocket that evening, and accidentally discharged the weapon. There were no signs of blood anywhere, but there was much fright. The judge said that he had heard that Americana sometimes fired atan adversary through their pockets, but was willing to give Thompson the benefit of the doubt. He was reported to be a harmless fellow enough, but his Honor thought it safest to place Thompson under bonds of L60 for his future good behavior.
