No one knows. It's all a mystery ; but, if cleanlines8 is next to godliness, St. Louis must be infernally near to its antipodes ; and while many exhaust tbeir vocabulary of expletive and objurgation in vivid and accurate description of the situation, no one has fouud the way out of it. Deeper into it we dive, year after year. It is a tide which never ebbs, but flowa congtantly, like the sea on the fabled cities buried under it. The Mayor plays Canute in hÍ8 buggy, and stretching out his hand coinmands the mud to retire ; and when it does not he turna around and rebukes his courtiers in the City Conncil, saying, " Now you know how it is yourselves." The abashed counsellors can only feebly murmur somethiug about a steam roller, or a hose pipe to wash the pavement with. Aa a mud prevention, the steam roller is as far f rom being a success as the fine, clear gravel of Mr. Sinith ; and, for the coming winter, it looks as if those who cannot afford top boots will have to wade on stilts.
