An English paper says : " A reniarkable examplo of preseuce of mind in a railway porter is afforded by an incident which occurred as Ihs down train f rom Perth to Aberdeen was leaving Guthrie station. A newsboy who accompanied this train while in the act of stepping into a carriage missed liis footing, and feil down between the platform and the wheels of the carriages. As the train was by this time in motion, any attempt on the paït of the boy to get up would have infallibly resulted in his instant death. Nine persons out of ten witnessing this accident would haveurned pale, and eithtr hrieked out at the top of their voioes advice of various kinds, or remained awe-struck and motionless, abiding the issue. Fortunately, however, one of the station poriers was master of the moment and of the situation, and, rusning forward, lay down on the platform ; then seizing the boy with his hands, held hiin flat on the ground till all the footboards of the train had passed over kim and the danger had ceased. This combination of cooluess and common-sense is an acquisition that may "well be envied by maay a person who, notwithstanding all the gifts of an elabórate eduoation, is less fit to battle with the difficulties and emergencies of life than the humble station porter at Guthrie, who thus saved the newsboy from a horrible death.
