We read of the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age, as marking the eras iu Üie progresa of civilizationamong mankind, and it is now ouggested tliát a suitable designaiion of the present ora ia the Paper Age. When we consider what au immense amonnt of gaper is used every day, on whleh isprinted the news of the prévious t-vvonty-fonr hnuvs, also the ïnuuy articles that are mode of this material, it must De aeknowledged that paper is pre eminently aharacteristió of this period of history. From a light fan to a heavy ear-wliod, the greatest variety ot'tliings is now made paper. The manufacture of paper eollars, paper boxes for various purposes, and of envelopes, is espeeially extensivo, and imjxjrt-ant. In Germany alone, it is calculated that nearly a thousand millioiiK of envelopes u-c matiitiactuked yearly, and, curiously aneugb, the introduotion of po.stal cards has not cailfl diminution of llu' numlicr. One of tbc most recent applicationfi of paper, is for the constracfcion of smaïl cosks or barrels. These 1 larrels are said to he. much superior to woodiii ones, boing at the same time lighter, more durable, and cheaper.
