Dear 8lR - Your kind letter just receivbd, and as 1 thought every body knew my general opinión on the points of your inquiry 1 cannot hesitate to answer yuu in such a wuy as to adiuit of no misconstruction. I never have been, am not now aud never will be a candidate tor the high office of President before any convention or the people. I shall always prefer to eee that office ülled by one of the millious who in the civil war stood by the old llag finnly and unequivocally, aud of these I notice man; ïiames willing and capable, prominently that of Gen. Hayes, now Governo of ühio, whom we know as a fine office and a gentleman in every sense. I do not, however, wish to be misuuderstooc iis presuining to advise anybody in th choice of the man. My wife and fam ily are stroug Catholics, bat I am not That, however, is nobody's business, believe in the common schools aud I do not stop at the little matters that seein to be exaggerated by the press in som quarters. However, these schools ar extravagant and indulge in costl; buildings and expensivo teachers so a to be too heavy a burdeu on the tax payers. This tendency ought to be checked, which uiay be oasily duue without making it a political qucstiou. Selfinterest will regúlate this and uiake these schools free to all, and capable of imparting the rudiinuuts of a good Euglish education. Yours truly, W. T. SHERMAN.
