Although the slavery ot wmte women is nominally abolished in Turkey, it still exista by counivance and collusion. The great mart wlience white alavés were formerly purchased, the regions of the Caucasus, is now interfered with by the advance of the Bussians, and white alavés can no more be brought thence in flocks. The present system is said to be as follows : The Turkish trader goes to tlio región whero parentasell theix daughters and women sell themselves. He takes to hiniself four wives, as a Mahometan is allowed to do, and returns to Oonstantinople with his wives. In this gUisc - as wives - they pass unchallenged, while as slaves they would be contraband. Hó disposes of the lot, and then goes back, sometimes, it is said, as often as four times a year, f or f resh lots, to be similarly disposed of. It does not.rermirn wp.stern civilization to teach how wholesale la-ws may bo evaded, and how ext to impossible it is, by the mere formality of eiiaoting a statute, to enforce a eforra with whioh a debauched public ainion does not sympathise. A slave i-afflo like that referred to sliocks every mmane aud virtuous instinct of a Cluistian community. Yet we shovüd be cliaritable, for it is not long since slavery was protocted by law in our own country, and wo stiíl have the "twin rclic,"'polygamy, in Utah, condemned by law, yet flourishing in spite of it.
