The Washington correspondent of a Western Journal says : " The President to-day, in conversation, alluded more in detail to the interview between him and (liarles O'Conor on Sunday last. O'Oonor called on the President with Secretary Fish. The President had been prevkrasiy notifled of the fact that O'Oonnor desircd an interview for the purpose of paying his respecta, and to oft'er in apology for the expressions made in a letter written to a friend many years ago, whioh, in the heat of the campaign, was exhumed and for the first time published. The language used was that " Grant was a dranken Democrat, picked out of the gutters of Galena by the Republican party for the purpose of ruling the nation." O'Conor told the President that he could remember no such letter, and would not deny that he had written it if he did. He begged to say that the charge was without foundation ; that he never, of his own knowledge, or i'rom hearsay, liad nny information upon whieh sueh an accusation could be based. The President said that he had never seen the letter, and only knew of its existence froni newspaper comments, adding that he had too much ex perienee in having been personally abused himself as a public officer to seek to aggravate this unpleasant phase of public life by searching for matters of this , sort published against him. The President says to-day that he deemed the explanation ampie, and was entirely satislicd."
