During the war, a number oí oid pensioners (as in the present day) were enrolled f or home sei'vioe. One of them ■was on gunrd at Cliatham, and, forgetting the discipline of his younger days, eat down on a stone when he ivas tired. A passer-by, scandalized by this bfeácli of duty, accosted the free-and-easy soidier, saying, " Pray, friend, who or what may yon be ?" "I am a kind of a sort of a sentry," replied the pensioner ; ' ' and, since I have answered your question, pray -who are you ?" "I am a kind of a sort of a General," rejoined the gentleman. "Oh!" cried the vetertin, epringing to his f eet, " theli I snpposo I must give yon a kind of a Hort of a salut(" And he presented arms accordagly.
