The First English Printing
Auout wu years ago tiie art 01 printing was introduced into Englnnd by Willium Cnxton. Thero is somc dispute F9garding the precise daté, but Mr. William Blades, Caxton's oiogrnplier, inclines to the belief that Caxtou arriyed in England in 1476. At all events the fivst indisputable date is that of the " Dictes and Siyinges of the Philosopliers, enprynted by mo, Willinm Oaxton, at AVestmestre, tlie yere of our Lord m.cccc.l.xxvij." The preseut year has therefore been adopted for the celebration of the f our hundreth anniverSiiry of the introduotkm of the art of prmting into Englaod, and next month there will be held at South Kensington an exhibition of antiquities and cnriosities eonnected with the art in its early days. ïhe proceeds of the exhibition are to be acided to an existiug fund for the ei-ectioc f a monuraeni toCaxtou. Five oandy-rnakeitë of Boston have been jndicteil for poisonous adnlteration; i'iü ir bonds were üxed at 6,000 oich.
