At the athletic games at Cornwall 011 :he Qneen's birthday, Mr. 11. R. McLeuuan, the champion hammer-thrower f)t' the world, after repeated solioitutions 'rom those present to give an exhibition of his power and skill as a hammerihrower, deoided to accede to their requosts. Several parties wc.ro sent out to waru the erowd to keep back, and, everything being aunounced in readiuess, Mr. McLenuau took up the hammer, a twelvepounder, we are informed, and, after swinging around with it flve or six timen, sent it spinning through tlie air a distance of abont 300 feet. As soon as the hammer lei t his hand all eyes were turned in the direction in which it was going, as it was evident it would fall in the erowd at the southwest corner of the iield. The pcoplo at that end of the fteld were seeft makiiig effort to get out of the way, but alas ! they were not all able to escape. A shriek of horror went Up from the erowd when the hammer was seen aïightmg among them Had striking a young girl. All rushcd tothe spot, fcariiig tluit it was a daughter, sister, or some fripnd that had been crushed beneath tlie hammer. It was soon made kuown that the victim ws a daughter of Michael Kiivanngh. The ball strück her on the back of the liead, completel smashingin hersknll. Those who were near by say the girl never moved a inuscle after tiie Kaïnmer struek her. The blood poured out of her mouth, nose, eyes and ears. She was about 13 years of age. The tears poured down poor McLennan's cheeks when he was informed that the girl was killed. Of course no blame oonld possiV]y be attaohed to him. He had not been in the habit of throwing the hammer for some years, and had very little idea of the distance or direction it would go. Had it gone in the direetiou he intended, it might not have reaohed the erowd. -
