Irrom tlie Lonuon Tunea.] The residence of the Kisrht Hon. Tff E. The ex-Premier nt once granted them permission to roam through the splendid grounds, but to the further request that he would address this large company of Lancashire admirers he at first gave a decided refusal. Then the committee who had the excursión in hand pressed him to at least show himself, and at last, after some hesitation, he said he and bis son (Mr. W. H. Gladstone, M. P. forWliitby) were, in the course of the afternoon, going out to feil a tree in the park, and he would then respond to any vote of thanks that might be accorded him, With this assurance the Bolton Liberáis were content, and the hall was anxiously watched by attentive scouts for the egress of the right honorable gentleman and his son. A little af ter 4 o'clock Mr. Gladstone and his son carne from the hall, ciad in rough working-suits, -with slouch hats, and, ax in hand, proceeded to a diatant portion of the park, and, the scouts having given the signal to the main body of excursionists, the woodmen were followed by large numbers of people. A halt was made under a lmge ash tree of certainly not less than fifteea feet circumference at the base of the trunk, and father and son set to vork in earnest in th presence of more spectators than ever before saw a tree felled, certainly on the demesne of Hawarden Oastle. As aome relief to the monotony of waiting, ft oxcursionists sang several glees, which served as accompanimente tothethudsof tne axes, ana, as me ex-jrremier pausa to breathe awhile, crowds gathered round liiin with a view to skaking hands. Like a gallant man, Mr. Gladstoue granted the favor to the ladics of the company, but Bternly refused it to the male m, who had to content themselves with loitj eheers at frequent intervals. The entlinöiasm was intense, and, when the right honorable gentleman leaned on his ai fo wipe away the perspiration from hia brow, his ecanty hair waving in toe breeze, and in the fore and background a spiendid landscape of woodland, tbc scène would have mode a picture. In one of the pauses the right honorabk gentleman complimented the excmsiiaists on their excellent singing, which, he said, was not remarkable, seciDg thst Lancashire people were renowned fct their musical ability; and, later on, ïha a perceptible inroad had beeü made int the trunk, two of the leading excnrsiot ists took the opportunity to propose and second a vote of thanks to the right honorable gentleman and Mrs. Gladstonek their kindness in allowing the se of the park, and for favoring them with their presence. The vote was carried amid loud cheeiing. Mr. Gladstone, leaning on his ax, & knowledged the compliment, and et pressod his pleasuro at seeiug so ma; f rienda present enjoying thescenentí the park, as his wife and son had enjoyed them from their infancy, and te himself for half his lifc. The rigii honorable gentleman then contímed: "I hope some of you will live to seetk time when there will not be Buch a contrast between manufacturing towns ml the country as there is now." A Cincinnati liquor dealer applied to a cuetomer for a letter of recommendition of a certain brand of wh'wV Viebad recently sold him. The customer wrok: " I have tried all sorts of insect poison and fiud none equal to your old cabiwl whisky. " ________
