On Friday forenoon last our citizens were startled by the report that Ms. S. P. Jewett, an oltl and prominent resident on West Huron street, had been shot and killed by his former son-in;law, Edward A. Hyde, but an inYestigation showed that Hyde had fired two shots at Mr. Jewett, at or in front of the latter's house, and that the second shot made a slight flesh wound on Mr. Jewett's left hip. Mr. Hyde married Mr. Jewett's daughter about twelve years ago, who procured a divorce from him some five years ago on the ground of cruelty, - since which she has lived in thia city, herself and ohildren, who were awarded to her custody until each should becnme fourteen years old, being supported by Mr. Jewett. The evidenoe given on the examination before Justice Beahan on Monday, showed that Hyde went to Jewett's house on Friday, sought and obtained admittance, and demanded of Mr. Jowett to soe his ohildren. He wiis told that they were not there, and asked to leave. Going out muttering and threatening, Mr. Jewett foĆ¼owed to see that he left the premises. After getting upon the street Hyde suddenly drew his pistol and fired, Jewett dodging the first ball. Hyde immediately came down town and gare himself in charge of an officor, - this in passing, though not in evidence. Hyde conducted his own case, and by his questions to Mr. Jewett aimed to show threats giving him fear, an attempt to kick him, &c, which Mr. J. denied. He also asked Mr. Jewett if he did not th reaten to have him arrestad and sent to the insano asylum, - indicating " method in his madness " if " insanity " is to be his defense. Hyde was held for trial and in default ot f2,000 bail committed to jail. It is understood that Hyde has frequently threatened the life of Mr. Jewett, of his wife and ot his children, and the family hare Hyed in fear of him whenever ui the city.
