Mr. Morrissey's career has certainly been a remarkable one. He was bom in the town of Templemore, Tipijerary county, Ireland, Fob. 12, 1831 ; emigrated to the Uuited States when öyears of age, and for many years resided at Troy and Lansingburg, in New York. He worked for a time in a pnper mili, and afterward learned the trade f a brush-maker. Subsequently he engaged as a deck-hand on a Hudsonriver steamer, and then became a runner for a steamboat compaDy in New York city. In 1852 he went to California, and soon made his appearance as a professional prize-fighter. His engagements froni tb at time until 1858 were numerous and very successful, and he finally won tlie champion's belt. In the latter year he retired from the ring and enteml politics, where ho became a power with a certain clasi in New York. He was finally elected to Congress, and served a term with no disdredit to his constituents. U's last political experience was as a candidato for the State Senate, in whieh he had a remarkably close oampaign, winning, however, by a emftll rnajority.
