Editor of Anavs : It seems to me desicable to relievo, is possible, the public mind Irom the paiuful apprehension by whick it is at present oppressed, viz.: that there is serioua danger of an eitensive epidemie oi malignant scarlet fever in this city. I am eonvinced that there it no such danger. For two yeaiH or more scarlet fever has prevailed iu Auu Arbor to a greater or less I extent, just as it does now, and in all this time there have been only three or foor real nialignaut cases. We have every reason to hope and believe that there will be no more case oi this type, siuce the ñialiguaucy dependa upon a peculiarly or special aptitude in the patieut, and does uot depend upon tho )aculianty of the epidemie. The simplest and mildest forin ot the disease may result from con tagion recoi ved froto a patiënt suffering f rora the most malignant form. As to the queetion of closing the school as a preventivo measure, nothing, in my opinión, could be more absurd or unjust. If the children of aftected families are quarantined for a few weeks (as they invariably are) all that is eesential and praoticable in this direction will have been done. To close the schools or to keep the children at home would, iu my opinión, ba a most inoonveuieut, expensive and useless meaaure. A more ratioual proposition would be to afford protection by isolating eaoh individual child 111 a jalase case until the yeara of susceptibility have been lived through. While I feol confideut that the present panic is lnjurious and uucalled for, and the proposition to close the Bchools absurd, I am equally contident that there are some cryiug( evils in the hygienic economy of Aun Arbor to which no doubt the present epidemie of scarlet tever is attributabla, and I trost no further delay will be permitted in ventilating and correcting them. If the Board of Health has no time nor inchnation for this important work ; if as their last report seemed to indícate the chiet aim and objeet of their labora is the caatiug of unjust aspersión upon oue of the moat useful nnd beneficent institutions oí the city, vz: the hospital, I would renpectf uliy suggest that a committee of intelligent citizeus be appointed whoso duty it shall be to inquire iuto the uiauy notorious and preveutable eources of origin of contagious disetiaes, and determine as to the most effectual mean of remedying them. To such a committee all respectable members of the medical profe6sion would gladly afford any assistance in their power. I am, etc, DO2STALD MACLEAX. Xovembor 18. Hata for men, boys, and childreu.
