The statistics of the total and individual consumption of tobáceo in the leading oountriea of the vrorld furnish interesting and suggestive figures. Some of the totals are enormous. i or instante, in Austria the consumption in 1876 was 31,614 tons; in France, during the same year, it was 31,435 tons, and 32,120 in 1877 ; in Italy, in 1876, it was 17,200 tons, and in Germany the estimated consumption was 80,000 tons. It is curious to observe how the consumption varies f rom one month to another. ïhus, taking the observatiou from two French and Italian factories, we find that in thos countries it increases in January, the cold weather ; decreases in March, with the beginning of spring ; rises again ; but during Ébepews of J uly f alls to a minimum, to rise gradually to a maximum during the cold weather ot December.
