A dispatch, dated Astoria, Oregon, April 20, brought the sad news of the wrecking at tliat point of the steamer Great Itepublic. The vessel and cargo were a total loss, and most of the passengers and crew were saved. Ten persons were drowned. The dispatch. says : At ; :;!5 this af ternoon the last tug arrived, bringing news that at 12 o'clock the last boat left the ship with flrst oftlcer Lennon, Mr. Davis, the second offlcer, the boatswain, two sailors and eight waiters, ten of whom, Lennon, Davis, boatswain, and seven others, were drowned, by the capsizing of a boat in the serf. Three men clung to the boat, and drifted ashore. The ship is going to pieces, and is breaking up very fast. The mammast feU during thé night. Tlie engines have broken through the bilge. The ship is now listed seaward, and the breakers wash completely over her. Her bedding, furniture, etc, are washing up with the surf on the beach. Capt. Carroll from the very tirst maintained the greatest discipline and order, and up to the very last, by inspiring the, passengers with confidence of safety, prevented a panic. All landed without loss of life. The town is full of people, many of them without money. Cliurches, public buildings and residences are all being thrown open for the accoinmodation of the passengers, who have lost everything. Capt. Carroll has made a statement in which he attributes the disaster to an error of judgment of the pilot in charge. Nelson, Pentwater ; Log Roller- Essm ïarrant, Muskegan. A Pennsylvania farmer wrltes that rails are much more durable (at least a third) when peeled ai making, than if left with the bark on. Sooner or later the bark will come off, and in doing so will bring one-half to one inch of decayed wood with it, besides leaving a diseased surface to continue the rot.
