Celebrating her ninetieth birthday anniversary yesterday, Miss Louise M. Tower of 715 Church St., is able to recall major events in Ann Arbor’s development to which she has been an eyewitness as a resident of this city most of her life.
In the ninety-year period, most of the growth of the city as an educational and medical center and in other respects, has taken place. She has seen the city develop from a farming trading center with a small college, to its present proportions.
Born May 16, 1847, on a farm five miles south of Saline, Miss Tower was the daughter of Royal and Deborah Ann Valentine Tower. The farm where she was born now is occupied by her nephew, Elmer O. Stimpson.
As a young woman, she moved to Ann Arbor with her parents, and Ann Arbor has been her home since. She lived for many years on S. State St. in the first house south of the Cutting apartments, and has resided at her present address for about 30 years.
She is the last living member of her immediate family. Mrs. Mabel Tower Craig, a niece, lives with her.
At one time, the family lived at Lodi Plains, in the house which was the dormitory building of the Lodi academy operated in 1851-1852 by Rufus Nutting.
A dinner honoring Miss Tower was given yesterday at Dearborn Inn, with 21 relatives and friends attending.
