Louis Lipnik of 1710 Cherokee, former owner and operator of the Fraternity Markets in Ann Arbor, died Saturday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He would have celebrated his 73rd birthday today.
Mr. Lipnik was born on Dec. 15, 1895, in Russia, and came to the United States in 1921. He started supplying U-M fraternities with meats from his Detroit firm in 1933, establishing his first Ann Arbor store in 1939 at 1010 Broadway.
He later opened Fraternity Markets at 1036 Broadway and 1308 S. University until retiring in 1962. After retirement and until his recent illness he was employed at the U-M Undergraduate library.
Survivors include his widow, Lillian, three sons, Gerald A. Lipnik, Alvin P. Lipnik and Seymour Lipnik, all of Ann Arbor, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at the Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield. Burial will be at Arborcrest Cemetery.
