Mr. Willis of Battle Creek, was be'ore the House committee onrailways wd cariáis yesterclay and presented a scheme tor a ship canal f rom Saugatuck ;o Detroit, utilizing the waters of Kalamazoo river. Ilis seheme proposes a canal about 110 feet in width at top and about 80 feet at bottom, and of depth euough to allow the passage of vessels of 1,500 tons. It is proposed to have mt six or eight locks, and it is asserted by the projectors that thedistance from Chicago to Liverpool would be made ibout 500 miles sliorter by building this canal. Mr. Willis will have another ïearing hef ore the committee next week. He will then present speciflea;ions and explain the plan more in de;ail. It is claimed by him that thia route is better adapted for a canal and the expense will be less than that of any canal yet proposed. The commitee has already several projects of thia iind before it. The entire cost of the aroposed canal is estimated to be about f5,000,000. Mr. Willis has been identifled with railroad interests for 50 years and was connected with tho early contractors in building the PenDsylvania railroad.
